Smart Websites

What smart website design in Dundee actually means

A business website built on a foundation that supports far more than content. Pick a capability to see it working. Not every business needs all of this — we will tell you when something is not worth building yet.

Let people answer their own question

Quotation calculators and product configurators turn a vague enquiry into a specification. The work is mostly in the logic rather than the interface — a pricing tool is only as good as the rules behind it.

  • Indicative pricing from rules you define
  • Configurators that build a specification as someone goes
  • The output saved, emailed and pushed onward automatically

Local market

Dundee is a hard city to impress with a brochure site

Dundee became the UK's first — and still only — UNESCO City of Design in 2014, and V&A Dundee opened on the waterfront in 2018, drawing over 830,000 visitors in its first year. The Scottish Cities Alliance describes the wider waterfront regeneration as a £1.6 billion programme, one of the largest in the UK.

The city's working economy is unusually technical for its size: a genuine games and creative cluster anchored by Abertay University and studios including Outplay Entertainment, the Abertay cyberQuarter, a Life Sciences Innovation District, the 32-hectare Michelin Scotland Innovation Parc, and a port supporting offshore wind at scale.

The commercial consequence is straightforward. Your customers, your staff and your competitors here are used to well-made digital things. A site that exists only to list your services and give a phone number does not read as modest — it reads as behind.

Who it's for

Who gets the most out of this

Businesses whose service is more complicated than a contact form

If the first question you ask a new customer takes ten minutes to answer, the website can ask it for you and arrive with the answer.

Technical

Dundee companies selling well beyond Dundee

Dundee is within ninety minutes of ninety per cent of Scotland's population, and plenty of businesses here sell nationally or internationally.

National

Teams drowning in manual admin

Enquiries retyped into a CRM. Appointments arranged by email. Deposits chased by phone. Every one of those is a process that can run itself.

Operations

Businesses that have outgrown their platform

The site was fine at five pages. It is now a stack of plugins fighting each other, and every change breaks something else.

Growth

Automation

Where automation earns its keep

In short

Automation is worth building when a task happens often, follows the same rules every time, and currently depends on a person remembering. Anything else is usually better left manual.

TriggerEnquiry arrivesSomeone completes a form, books a slot or configures a price.
ConditionScored against your rulesSector, scale, location and timescale decide what happens next.
ActionWritten to your CRMWith the right owner attached, not left in a shared inbox.
ActionAcknowledged usefullyA reply that answers the person's actual question, not an autoresponder.
WatchChased if it goes quietFollow-up fires when nobody has replied in two days.

None of that is exotic. It just requires the website and the business systems to be designed as one thing rather than bolted together afterwards. Deeper work runs through Business Automation and CRM Systems.

How we build it

Scope decided honestly, then built in the open

For a functional build the first stage matters more than usual, because scope decided badly there costs real money later.

  1. 1
Discovery and scopingWhat the business does, where the friction is, and which parts of the process the website could reasonably take over.
  2. 2
Structure and interfacePages, navigation and — where there is functionality — the flow a user follows through it. A booking journey settled in a diagram is far cheaper than one settled in code.
  3. 3
DesignKey templates and any functional interfaces designed and signed off before the build begins.
  4. 4
Build and integrationBuilt mobile-first on the stack the project calls for, with integrations connected and tested against real systems rather than assumed to work.
  5. 5
ReviewYou test it properly on a staging link, including the functionality, with the edge cases you know your customers will find.
  6. 6
Launch and iterateLive, with tracking and enquiry monitoring configured from day one, so the first round of improvements is based on real behaviour.

Ownership & flexibility

Built to be extended, and to stay yours

We choose the technology around what the business needs rather than forcing every project onto one platform. For some builds that means a well-built content management system; for others custom development, an ecommerce platform, a custom front end, or a site wired straight into the systems the business runs on. Ongoing Care is available if you would rather updates, backups and monitoring were not your problem.

Right tool for the jobDecided on your requirements, and we tell you what we are recommending and why.
Maintainable codeExtendable in two years by someone who is not us — not a stack of conflicting plugins.
Your assetsDomain, hosting, content, code and data. Access handed over as a matter of course.
No agency platformNothing you must keep paying for simply to stay online.
Site already exists but cannot be extended?

If the foundations are sound and the problem is capability rather than structure, a redesign is often the faster route than a rebuild.

FAQs

Questions Dundee businesses ask us

We want more than a brochure site. What's realistic in a first build?
More than most people expect, provided the scope is decided honestly at the start. A first build can very reasonably include online booking, conditional enquiry forms, document uploads, payment or deposit collection, CRM integration and automated follow-up. What tends to be unrealistic is a bespoke portal or a complex configurator squeezed in alongside a full site build on a compressed timeline — not because it can't be done, but because doing it properly deserves its own scope. We'll usually suggest launching the site with the functionality that pays for itself immediately, then adding the ambitious piece as a defined second phase.
Can you build interactive tools like calculators, configurators or portals?
Yes. Quotation calculators, service and product configurators, and secure customer or member portals are all things we build. The work is mostly in the logic rather than the interface: a pricing calculator is only as good as the pricing rules behind it, and those usually live in someone's head rather than in a document. Expect the first stage to be a proper conversation about how you actually price or specify work. Once that's written down, building it is the straightforward part.
We sell nationally, not just in Dundee. Is a Dundee page still worth having?
Yes, for two reasons. Local searches convert well because the intent is specific, so the regional work is worth having even if it isn't your main market. And a verifiable location is a credibility signal for national buyers — suppliers with no clear physical presence get more scrutiny than they expect. The thing to avoid is building your whole site around the city. Organise around services and customer types, keep local content genuine and contained, and one website serves both audiences without either being compromised.
Can the site connect to our CRM and internal systems?
In most cases, yes. Where a documented API exists we connect directly; where one doesn't, there is usually a route via an intermediate service. The more important question is what should happen to the data once it moves — which system is the source of truth, who owns a lead when it arrives, and what happens when something fails. We work that out during discovery, because an integration that silently stops working is worse than no integration at all. Monitoring and failure handling are part of the build, not an extra.
What will you actually build our site on?
Whatever the project genuinely calls for. For a lot of business websites a well-built CMS is the right answer, because your team can edit content without a developer and the site stays portable. Where a project needs more — a heavily interactive tool, an ecommerce platform, a custom front end, or a site wired directly into booking and business systems — we build it that way rather than forcing it into a CMS it does not suit. We tell you what we are recommending and why before you commit, and the decision is made on your requirements rather than on what we prefer to build.
Can we add functionality later without rebuilding?
That's the main reason to build the foundation properly. A site that's been extended by stacking plugins reaches a point where every addition risks breaking something, and the only honest answer becomes "start again". A site built with clean structure, sensible custom code and a clear separation between content and functionality can absorb a booking system in year two and a client portal in year three without touching what's already working. We plan for the capabilities you've told us are likely, even when they're not in the initial scope.
What does review and handover look like for a technically-minded client?
More thorough than usual, in our experience, and that's welcome. You get a staging link and enough time to test properly — including the functionality, with the awkward cases your customers will inevitably find. We'd rather you broke it before launch than after. At handover you get a walkthrough of the CMS, documentation of any custom functionality and integrations, and admin access to everything. If you have your own developer who'll be maintaining it, we'll happily brief them directly.

Tell us what the website should be doing

Not what it should look like — what it should be doing. Which tasks it should take off your team, which questions it should answer without a phone call, which systems it should be talking to. We will tell you honestly what is worth building now and what should wait.
