Websites and business systems for funeral directors

Central Systems designs and builds websites for funeral directors, and the systems behind them. A modern funeral home website can set out services and prices clearly, take a structured enquiry, let a family work out an indicative cost, and pass all of it into your back office instead of into an inbox.

The problem

Why most funeral director websites underperform

Not because they look dated. Because they were built as brochures, and a brochure cannot take an enquiry, answer a practical question at midnight, or tell your office anything.

Brochure-onlySix pages of copy and a phone number. Everything a family needs to decide is missing.
Awkward on a phoneMost first visits happen on a mobile, often late at night, often by someone distressed.
Price list as an imagePublished as scanned JPEGs — unreadable to screen readers, invisible to search, impossible to keep current.
Service detail buriedWhat is actually included, and what it costs, sits three clicks down or nowhere at all.
No obvious next actionThe site ends without telling anyone what to do, so the only route left is the phone.
Enquiries as loose emailThey arrive in a shared mailbox, get forwarded, and are re-typed into the office system by hand.
Duplicated entryThe same family details keyed into the website enquiry, the diary, the paperwork and the account.
Two separate worldsThe website and the way the business actually runs have nothing to do with each other.

What it can do

What a smart funeral director website can do

Pick a capability to see it working. Very few firms need all of this — it is chosen around how you arrange funerals, not sold as a package.

Answer the questions families actually arrive with

Most funeral websites bury the practical detail. Service options, what is included, what happens first, and the price list all belong where someone can find them without ringing you — including the Standardised Price List you are already required to publish.

  • Service and option information set out plainly rather than as a brochure
  • Standardised Price List published as real text, not a scanned image
  • A short guided path through the first few days, ordered by what can actually start yet

The join

An enquiry should not die in an inbox

This is the part most funeral website projects leave out. The website is the public-facing end of a business system, not a separate thing that happens to sit on the internet.

A family arrivesOften on a phone, often at night, usually before they have rung anyone.
They work something outServices, options and an indicative figure built from your own published prices.
An enquiry is madeWith the choices, the figure they saw and their contact details attached — and a reference.
It lands in the back officeAs a record in Berevia, not an email in a shared mailbox.
It becomes an arrangementConverted without re-keying: the day, the paperwork, the diary and the account follow from it.

Where that back office is Berevia, the hand-off is direct. Where you already run something you are happy with, the same enquiry can be routed into it — see Business Automation and CRM Systems.

Our own product

The back office, built for funeral directors

Funeral management software for independent funeral directors, built around how the work actually runs rather than a general-purpose CRM with the labels changed. Nine places to be, and the paperwork, the diary and the account all hang off the arrangement.

£120 / month Most funeral software charges per case. Berevia does not. Available as a standalone product from £120 per month, with discounted pricing for Central Systems package clients.

Why us, specifically

You should not have to explain your own trade to your web company

Most agencies meeting a funeral director start from scratch, and you end up paying to teach them. These are things we already had to get right in order to build the software, so they are not a discovery exercise on your project.

Scotland

Everything below is modelled on Scottish practice. A firm in England, Wales or Northern Ireland follows a different documentary route, and we would configure to it rather than pretend the two are the same.

Paperwork has an order, and it bitesNothing starts before the doctor's certificate, the crematorium will not confirm until it holds both the application and the registration, and burial takes the lair route instead. We built that as dependencies, not tick boxes.
Someone in your care is not a contact recordThey have a place, a length of time, an identification confirmed by two of your staff and every move logged in order. None of that is a field on a customer.
A funeral is a day, not a dateCollection time, service timing, music, order of service, bearers and which vehicles are going where — attached to the arrangement rather than scattered across a diary.
Third-party fees are not your incomeYou settle the crematorium, the registrar, the minister and the newspaper long before the family settles with you. Treating that as turnover misreads the business.
Waiting on an estate is not a bad debtAn account held up by confirmation behaves nothing like one that is simply unpaid, and lumping the two together makes your ageing tell you the wrong thing.
The website is where a lot of this startsWhich is why we treat the enquiry, the published price list and the cost tool as part of the same job rather than as marketing that happens elsewhere.
The full paperwork engine is on the product page

Including the burial route, what unlocks what, and what happens when something upstream changes after the fact.

Already have a website?

It may not need replacing because it is old

In short

Your current website may not need replacing because it is old. It may need replacing because it no longer supports how the business operates.

Plenty of funeral homes have a site that looks perfectly respectable and still cannot take a structured enquiry, publish a price list as readable text, or tell the office anything. That is not an appearance problem, and a new coat of paint will not fix it.

Where the foundations are sound and the shortfall is capability, a website redesign is usually faster and cheaper than starting again — and keeps the search visibility you have already built. Where the structure itself is the obstacle, a fresh website design build is the honest answer. We will tell you which before anyone quotes.

Redesign

Keep and improve

The site works, looks acceptable and ranks. What it cannot do is take part in the business.

  • Structure is sound, content is broadly right
  • Needs enquiry capture, a price list and a planning tool
  • You want to keep existing search visibility

New build

Start properly

The site fights you. Every addition breaks something, and nothing connects to the office.

  • Brochure template that cannot be extended
  • Price list published as images
  • Multiple branches crammed into one page

FAQs

Questions funeral directors ask us

Can you redesign an existing funeral director website?
Yes, and it is often the better route. If the structure is sound and the shortfall is capability — no structured enquiry, a price list published as images, nothing reaching the office — a redesign keeps the search visibility you have already built and costs less than starting again. Where the existing build actively obstructs what you need, we will say so rather than sell you a redesign that cannot deliver it.
Can enquiries flow into our office system?
That is the point of doing it properly. An enquiry can arrive as a record rather than an email, carrying the services the family chose, the indicative figure they were shown and their contact details, with a reference so nothing is re-keyed. Where your back office is Berevia the hand-off is direct; where you run something else, the same enquiry can be routed into it wherever a documented integration route exists.
Do we have to replace our current software?
No. Plenty of firms have something that works for part of the job — accounts, or a diary — and there is no sense in ripping it out. The website can feed whatever you already run. Berevia is there if you want one operational view instead of four, but it is an option, not a condition of working with us.
Can you build online funeral planning or cost tools?
Yes. A planning tool built from your own published prices, keeping your charges separate from the fees you pay out on the family's behalf, and producing a reference the family brings to the arrangement. It is not a generic estimator with made-up figures — it uses your price list, and it is only worth building if your pricing can be expressed as rules.
Is Berevia a CRM?
Not really, and calling it one undersells it. A CRM tracks contacts and opportunities. This tracks people in your care, a paperwork chain where each document depends on the one before it, a funeral day with bearers and vehicles and music attached, disbursements you have paid out and not yet recovered, an ashes register and pre-need plans. There is enquiry management in it, but that is one screen of nine.
Can the system be adapted to our workflow?
Within reason, yes. Business name, staff, premises, chapels, the crematoria and burial grounds you use, your price list, your reference conventions and the relevant integrations are all configuration. The underlying model — that paperwork has dependencies, that disbursements are not your income, that a person in your care has a location and a chain of custody — is the product, and adapting that is a development conversation rather than a setting.
Do you only build WordPress websites?
No. We choose the technology on what the project has to do. For many funeral director websites a well-built content management system is right, because your team can update service information without ringing us. Where a project needs a custom front end, an ecommerce component or direct integration with back-office systems, we build it that way instead. We tell you what we are recommending and why before you commit.
Can multiple branches use the same system?
Yes. Multi-branch firms are one of the cases generic templates handle worst — each location usually deserves its own page, its own contact route and its own presence in local search, without duplicating the whole site. On the operations side, cases, diary and accounts can be seen across branches or filtered to one.

Other industries we build for

Funeral directors get the deepest build we do, because the work needed it. The same thinking applies to every industry below.
